Is Your Family Disaster-Ready?

Unfortunately, disasters occur around us all the time. With that being the case, it’s important to make sure you are ready for anything.

With everything going on in our world today, from flooding, hurricanes, fires, and more, one question comes to mind: Are we truly prepared for disaster?

On an individual level, there are a few ways to prepare. First of all, become familiar with what your property insurance covers. You might be surprised by what is truly protected.

This is a good time to think critically about which of your possessions are truly irreplaceable and to develop a plan for removing those items from your home in the event of a disaster.

When it comes to protecting the property itself, make sure your yard is graded in such a way that water will flow away from your home. This is something you can and should do ahead of time as a preventative measure, especially if you live an area prone to flooding.

In the event of a disaster, will you and your family be prepared?

Of course, the safety of your family is the most important. Ask yourself if you and your family have an escape plan. It’s also good to discuss a designated meeting place with your family in case you become separated during an emergency.

Also, make sure that your plans don’t conflict with the emergency procedures followed by the state or county you live in. You wouldn’t want to choose a meeting point only to discover during an emergency that the decided-upon location is blocked off.

The best option you have is to ask your local authorities what they recommend
as a meeting place.

Finally, there is the issue of legal documents. Hopefully you have a safe where these items are stored, but you may also want to consider if there are any documents you would want to take with you when you evacuate.
